Arizona State University through the Department of Industrial Engineering and the Interdisciplinary Committee on Statistics has developed a new educational initiative in six sigma methodology. This program allows professionals to pursue an educational focus in six sigma techniques and their implementation as part of a graduate degree and through the graduate certificate in statistics. The program is delivered to engineering and technical professionals conveniently over the Internet. This convenient format provides the flexible format necessary for busy professionals.
Six sigma is a strategic approach to implementing quality, process, and business improvement through the use of statistical and other analytic tools applied to problems that have meaningful impact on key business results. Developed at Motorola in the 1980s, six sigma has spread to many industrial and business organizations. General Electric, Ford Motor Company, Honeywell, among others, have received widespread attention in the business media for their successful six sigma programs.
ASU faculty and industry leaders who have successfully deployed six sigma transformations teach the program bringing both methods and leadership and deployment strategies into the curriculum.
The six sigma program at ASU consists of a combination of course work and an applied project, during which a black belt project will be completed. The requirements are:
IEE 572 Design of Engineering Experiments
IEE 578 Regression Analysis
IEE 570 Advanced Quality Control SPC
IEE 581 Six Sigma Methodology
IEE 585 Six Sigma Capstone
Students must complete at least two of three courses - Regression Analysis (IEE 578), Design of Experiments (IEE 572) and SPC (IEE 570) - before enrolling in IEE 581 Six Sigma Methodology. The third course must be completed prior to or along with IEE 581 Six Sigma Methodology. Finally, students complete a six sigma black belt project reconciled to demonstrate value-added return to their sponsoring organization.
Upon completion of the program, students will be awarded a Graduate Certificate in Statistics with Emphasis in Industrial Statistics and Six Sigma Methodology. Graduates possess all of the requirements for certification as a Six Sigma Black Belt. In addition to the graduate certificate, the student will receive a Six Sigma Black Belt professional certification and a letter documenting your achievement at this level.
